Heavy rains in Tamil Nadu.Heavy rains have caused floods in four southern districts of Tamil Nadu, India. The districts are – Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari. According to local media reports, normal life is being disrupted in these districts due to heavy floods.
NDTV reported that Tuticorin district of the state received 600 mm of rain in 15 hours. Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli district recorded 260 mm. Apart from this, Kanyakumari received 170 mm of rain.A public holiday has been declared on Monday in the districts affected by the torrential rains. Schools, colleges, banks, private institutions and public sector organizations will also remain closed on this day.
Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts are knee-deep in waist-high water as the Thamraparani river is now stagnant due to the release of water from Papanasam, Perunjani and Pechuparai dams.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rains on Monday as well.
Two 50-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been rushed to Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts to deal with the disaster. Three teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in Kanyakumari district. Besides, four thousand policemen have been deployed in these affected districts.
