Elections are not being participatory this time.Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman said that the 12th National Assembly elections are not being participatory.

He said this at a press conference organized at the TIB office in Dhanmondi of the capital on Thursday. The press conference was organized to highlight ‘Political Commitment to Practice Democracy, Good Governance and Integrity: Recommendations of TIB. TIB researcher Kawsar Ahmed presented the recommendations. It made 76 recommendations on 9 subjects. In the press conference, Iftekharuzzaman said, ‘What is meant by participatory elections in the true sense, is not happening this time either; This is of concern. In that case there will be an election; Who will be in power – that will also be determined. But people’s right to vote will not be established. It will also be impossible to secure public confidence.’

He said that seat-based parliamentary democracy has been practiced. Now is the time to establish proportional representation parliament. It needs to be discussed. This requires free, fair and impartial elections. There are many components to this. One of them is the necessary reforms to ensure the role of party influence and interests in the electoral government. Article 70 of the constitution needs to be changed. Parliament must ensure representation of marginalized people. Political party is the most important institution for democracy, good governance, justice. Here they play a central role, with power in their hands. Reform is needed here too.

Iftekharuzzaman also said that cyber security law, personal data protection law should be reformed taking everyone’s opinion into consideration. Besides, he also talked about the necessary reforms in the laws to ensure freedom of media and freedom of speech.
