Hundreds of BNP leaders and activists have gathered at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital to participate in the youth rally organised by BNP’s three youth-student organisations — Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal.
The rally is scheduled to begin at 2:00pm today.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will address the rally as the chief guest.
Since morning, leaders and activists from Dhaka and nearby districts have been arriving on trucks and pick-up vans at the rally venue, our correspondent reports from the spot.
They were carrying banners, festoons, and placards in a favour of their one-point demand — election under a non-partisan interim administration.
Meanwhile, a large number of police personnel were seen in and around Suhrawardy Udyan.
On June 2, three BNP associate bodies announced youth rallies in Chattogram, Bogura, Khulna, Barishal, Sylhet, and Dhaka to drum up the support of the young generation for the BNP’s movement.
Meanwhile, Dhaka-bound commuters faced hurdles on the Dhaka-Aricha highway as police set up check posts in Savar’s Aminbazar area ahead of the rally, causing severe congestion.
The traffice situation became normal around 11:00am as police removed the checkpost, Officer-in-Charge of Savar Model Police Station Deepak Chandra Saha told our Savar correspondent.
