Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq today said police could not prevent the attack on Ashraful Alom alias Hero Alom as he went to the same polling centre twice without informing the police.

Alom was physically assaulted at a polling centre in Banani around 3:20pm on July 17, the day of the Dhaka-17 by-polls. The people, who were held over the attack, are from the ruling party.

Replying to questions from reporters after a programme at Polwel Market in the capital, the DMP chief said the miscreants might have taken the chance to attack Hero Alom, an independent candidate of the by-polls.

He said due to a problematic situation at the centre, Hero Alom and his activists were forced to leave. He was attacked by miscreants outside the centre, he added.

The accused are being identified by scrutinising the CCTV footage, the commissioner said.

So far, 10 people have been arrested in this incident, he said, adding that the police will be more vigilant in future for the security of candidates.

The DMP Commissioner also said that the law enforcement agencies are ready to take all kinds of challenges to make elections fair in the future.
