A man was arrested by police today for allegedly trying to enter West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence with weapons in his car in Kalighat of south Kolkata, India.
Mamata was in her home at that time, our New Delhi correspondent reports quoting Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal.
For all latest news, follow The My News’s Google News channel. The incident took place hours before she was scheduled to leave her residence to reach the ‘Martyr’s Day’ rally venue near Dharmatala in the central part of the city.
The man, clad in a black coat and tie, was identified as Sheikh Noor Alam, said the Kolkata police commissioner.
He was arrested by Kolkata police as he tried to drive a car with a ‘police’ sticker on it to Mamata’s residence on Harish Chatterjee Street, Vineet Goyal said.
“The man was carrying firearms, one kukri, ganja and several identity cards of different agencies like BSF and others in the car. He wanted to meet the CM. Our officers intercepted him when he was trying to enter Harish Chatterjee Street. Considering the fact that the CM is a Z-category (highest category) protectee, this is a serious issue. We are trying to find out what was his actual purpose,” Goyal said adding the man was talking incoherently.
“He is saying that he is from Anandapur, then he is claiming to be from Paschim Medinipur. We are checking what’s the truth,” the city police chief said.
Meanwhile, personnel from the Kolkata Police Special Task Force (STF), Special Branch and officers from the local police station My News Bangladeshted to interrogate the arrested man at the Kalighat Police Station, another officer said.
The black-hatchback car was seized.
