Managing Director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) MAN Siddique said, ‘The Prime Minister will inaugurate the Agargaon-Motijheel section from Agargaon station today at 2.30 pm. Then he will take metro rail to Motijheel for another inauguration ceremony at Motijheel station.’
He also said that the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the construction of MRT Line-5 (Northern Route). This line will be 20 km from Hemayetpur via Bhatara to Gabtali, Mirpur-10, Gulshan. The project of Tk 41 thousand 239 crore will be completed in 2028.
The managing director of DMTCL said that due to the inauguration ceremony, the regular metro service from Uttara to Agargaon will be stopped today.Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated the first phase of metro rail from Uttara to Agargaon on December 28.
Apart from this, the Metrorail will stop at three stations in the Agargaon-Motijheel section, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.He said, ‘The length of Agargaon to Motijheel section is 8.72 km. Metrorail will stop at Farmgate-Sachibalay-Motijheel station.’
The minister said that the metro rail will operate on the Uttara-Motijheel route from 5 November every day from 7:30 am to 11:30 am.He also informed that after 11.30 am, metro rail movement will be stopped on Motijheel-Agargaon route and will continue till 8.30 pm on Uttara-Agargaon section.
Considering the convenience of the people, the road from Motijheel to Kamalapur has been extended by 1.16 km, the bridge minister said, adding that the extended part will be completed by June 2024.Each train can carry 2,300 passengers at a speed of 100 to 110 kmph. However, the speed will be reduced in curved areas.
After coming to power in 2009, the Awami League government took various initiatives to reduce the pressure on the capital. According to the details of the project, an initiative has been taken to build a metro rail across the capital to ease traffic congestion.The Metrorail will be able to carry 60,000 passengers per hour and 5 lakh passengers per day, with a train arriving at each station every four minutes.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is building the metrorail and providing loan support to the project on soft terms. JICA has given Rs 19,500 crore for the project.
